It will be the first comprehensive paediatric palliative care centre to be built in Spain. And it will house state-of-the-art facilities, services and technology that will be at the service of families.
Access to pediatric palliative care remains inequitable in our country. That is the reality. The Spanish Society of Paediatric Palliative Care (PEDOPAL ) says that it is important to make society, public authorities and health officials aware of these shortcomings.
We insist: the beds in Spain for minors who need paediatric palliative care are insufficient. There are few public hospitals with 24/7 paediatric palliative care. Specifically 3: the Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, the Virgen de la Arrixaca , in Murcia or the Baby Jesus , in Madrid.
This innovative Centre will have 15,000 square metres and will be surrounded by another 5,000 square metres. Its construction will be financed entirely by the Amancio Ortega Foundation , with a budget of 30 million euros, on a plot ceded by the Madrid City Council in the district of San Blas. It will have a day center with 24 places, 30 rooms for admissions and 4 farewell apartments. Also, pharmacy, physiotherapy rooms, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy in swimming pools, psychological care for patients and their families, recreational and rest spaces, multi-confessional space, etc.
