Without self-care there is no care: a day to protect those who accompany in pediatric palliative care

The Foundation's EAPS because Live participates in the annual conference on self-care of professionals, organized on this occasion by the EAPS of the Hospital de San Rafael in Madrid. This conference is part of the "la Caixa" Foundation's Programme for Comprehensive Care for People with Advanced Diseases.

Madrid, October 24, 2025 The Foundation's complete EAPS team because Live participates in the Self-Care Day held in the Assembly Hall of the San Juan de Dios–Comillas University School.

 

These conferences, which take place annually as part of the Program for the Comprehensive Care of People with Advanced Illnesses of the "la Caixa" Foundation, seek to take care of those they care for, offering the teams a space for respite, reflection and personal and professional connection.

 

The Self-Care Days are held twice a year and, in each edition, the organization falls to a different EAPS of each territorial commission. On this occasion, the day of the Centre-Levante Commission (Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and Levante) was coordinated by the EAPS of the Hospital San Rafael .Under the slogan "Prepare for sabotage!" , the session combined rest, learning and participatory dynamics aimed at reflecting on the internal challenges of the Teamwork in palliative care.

Caring for better accompaniment

The Foundation's EAPS because Live works accompanying children with incurable diseases and their families, integrating psychological, social and spiritual care in coordination with the UAIPP of the University Children's Hospital Baby Jesus of Madrid.

 

The intensity of this work requires taking care of one's own team as well. These conferences are key to preventing burnout, strengthening cohesion and reinforcing the sense of accompaniment between professionals.

A network that grows every year

The Self-Care Days are held every year in different territories with the participation of more than 60 EAPS teams that are part of the program promoted by the "la Caixa" Foundation . These teams offer psychological, social and spiritual support to people in situations of advanced illness and their families, both in hospitals and in third sector entities.

 

The "la Caixa" Foundation Programme articulates a network of EAPS organized by territorial zones. Each team works from its reference institution to guarantee comprehensive support for patients and families with complex needs.

 

Its work contributes to:

  • reduce the suffering associated with the disease,
  • improve life in the process,
  • strengthen the resilience of family systems,
  • and humanizing health care.

Taking care of the present to sustain the future

Beyond technical learning, these conferences are, without a doubt, an opportunity to Reaffirming team ties and to strengthen trust and shared leadership, fundamental pillars of the accompaniment model of the Foundation .

The experience reminded us that care starts from within, and that The physical, psychological and emotional health of professionals is the basis for sustaining care for families with humanity and quality.

In addition, these spaces allow you to acquire self-care tools, recognize personal limits and prevent risks such as compassion fatigue or accumulated exhaustion, common in contexts of high vulnerability. Promoting an internal culture that normalises rest, supervision and emotional expression helps to preserve motivation, collective resilience and the continuity of a truly respectful accompaniment.
