Palliative care, strengthening care
The signing of this Agreement complements the care provided in the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit of the Miguel Servet Maternal and Children's Hospital in Zaragoza.

Madrid, February 19, 2025.- The Government of Aragon and the Foundation because Live have renewed their collaboration agreement to promote paediatric palliative care in the region, through the progressive incorporation of professionals from the psychosocial field and the continuity of the music therapy programme that since 2018 has been improving the lives of children and their families.

 

By virtue of this collaboration agreement, signed on 19 February between the Minister of Health, José Luis Bancalero Flores, and the director of the Foundation because Live , José Carlos López Seisdedos have been incorporated, progressively, New services to the care provided in the Pediatric Palliative Care Unit of the Miguel Servet Maternal and Child Hospital in Zaragoza , at no cost to the Administration.

 

In 2018, the music therapy and in 2023 and 2024, the Psychological and social care respectively. This progressive growth reflects the commitment on both sides to provide comprehensive care that meets the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of children in paediatric palliative care and their families.

Collaboration to complement care

This collaboration complements the magnificent work carried out by the interdisciplinary team of the Central Paediatric Palliative Care Unit of Aragon (UCPPA) , located in the Miguel Servet Maternal-Child Hospital.

 

The agreement guarantees the continuity of the music therapy program and psychological care, already integrated into the daily activity of the Unit, and the incorporation of a social worker, adding to the professionals already involved in the UCPPA. The Government of Aragon will provide the necessary resources, while the Foundation will provide specialists in psychology and social work, without entailing an economic cost for the administration.

The Importance of Pediatric Palliative Care and Equitable Access

Paediatric palliative care (PPC) is essential to ensure comprehensive care for children with incurable diseases, as well as their families. This care not only relieves physical pain, but also offers emotional, social and psychological support, significantly improving the lives of families with pediatric palliative needs.

 

This agreement is an example of how collaboration between public administrations and third sector entities contributes to improving access to these services, bringing specialized resources to families who need them, regardless of their geographical or socioeconomic situation.

Commitment to the dignity and well-being of minors

Music therapy, which since 2018 has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing pain, cognitive stimulation and improving self-esteem in patients of this Unit, will be reinforced with the psychosocial care that will be provided by the new professionals.

José Carlos López Seisdedos, Director of Foundation because Live , underlined the importance of this collaboration: "This agreement shows the commitment of the Aragonese Government to paediatric palliative care and highlights the work that it has been carrying out for years in the Autonomous Community of Aragon through the Paediatric Palliative Care Unit of the Miguel Servet Maternal and Children's Hospital for the benefit of families. Comprehensive and humanized care for families

The Paediatric Palliative Care Network of Aragon was created in 2017 to guarantee multidisciplinary care adapted to the specific needs of these patients. This new agreement seeks to respond to national recommendations that highlight the need to incorporate professionals from the psychosocial field to offer truly comprehensive care. The main beneficiaries will be the families, who will have more complete support adapted to their circumstances, relieving their emotional burden and favoring a full life.

 

With this agreement, Aragon reinforces its commitment to the humanization of health care and comprehensive care in the process of illness and grief, offering a multidisciplinary and specialized approach to pediatric palliative care.
