Palliative care, multiple people
The Foundation because Live supports Dr. Jesús Sánchez Etxaniz after his reprimand for attending a girl in palliative care after hours. The Foundation insists on claiming 24/7 care as a right and not as a luxury.

Madrid, June 02, 2025 – In view of the news published in different media about the reprimand of Dr. Jesús Sánchez Etxaniz for attending outside his working hours to a girl in a situation of pediatric palliative care, from the Foundation because Live We want to express our deepest support for this professional and, above all, give voice to the families we represent.

Several media outlets have echoed this case, also highlighting the dedication of Dr. Sánchez Etxaniz and his team in pediatric palliative care.

24/7 care: a right of families

The care provided by professionals such as Dr. Sánchez Etxániz should not be an exception but a reflection of the commitment to the rights of children who cannot be cured and to their families. For more than 15 years, at Porque Viven, we have been working precisely to ensure that this care is dignified, humane and continuous.

As established in the consensus document of the Ministry of Health of 2014 signed by all the Ministries of Health of the different Autonomous Communities, care in paediatric palliative care must be guaranteed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is not an ideal, but an institutional and health commitment.

The key role of visionary professionals

Many of the professionals who work in the field of paediatric palliative care do so, in addition to their responsibility, moved by commitment and justice, being aware that the needs of these families are immense. Needs that have no schedule. In these cases, they act out of a deep sense of responsibility and justice. They know that the needs of these families have no schedule, and that their role is to guarantee presence, care and response.

In addition to being a clinical and human reference in direct care , Dr. Sánchez Etxaniz has been a key promoter of the visibility of families in professional and scientific spaces, such as the PEDPAL Congress , organized by and for medical communities.

The voice of the experts: the support of Dr. Ricardo Martino

As Dr. Ricardo Martino, a national leader in pediatric palliative care, has recalled:

"The international consensus, scientific documents, the Spanish Society of Paediatric Palliative Care and the Ministry of Health itself, in a document signed by all the Ministries throughout Spain in 2014, recognise that it is necessary to provide 24-hour care because, otherwise, families feel helpless, powerless, and go to hospital. Where there is 24-hour care, children can be cared for and can, if necessary, die at home. That is done in Madrid. Children can be at home until the end. A lot of healthcare in Spain has been looked at in what was done in the Basque Country, which is why news like this one is so striking."

Our commitment to professionals who guarantee humanity and presence

From the Foundation because Live We reiterate our unconditional support for Dr. Jesús Sánchez Etxaniz and to all the professionals who, with their dedication and humanity, guarantee that Pediatric Palliative Care get where they need to go: to the hearts of families.
